Currently it is estimated that only 1 in 10 companies in the UK have a freephone number. Prices are now affordable to the extent that it is even viable to use 0800 numbers for domestic purposes. (e.g. a businessmen staying away in a hotel can call home without the expensive hotel charges, children can call their parents from their friends phone for free etc).

In the United States approximately 90% of businesses now have a freephone number. The UK is just starting to wake up to the enormous marketing benefit of having a freephone number. In todays market it is increasingly easy to lose customers to "the competition" if they have an 0800 number and you don't.
